Vedic Astrology - How Does it Work?
- by Sam Geppi
Whether you know it or not, you (and everyone you know), are under the influence of astrology every moment of every day. Your higher self (as shown by the planets) are reaching down and communicating through your emotional body (as shown by the astrology signs), which are leading you into action/karma (as shown primarily by the astrology houses). This is a continual process known as...

... Your Unfolding Karma

This dance has been happening for billions and billions of years, long before there were human beings, in form, to even experience it. One of the most important "reframes" of the Universal Vedic astrology method, is to first clearly track "what is astrology?" Once I began independent study, and stopped listening to the contorted explanations of what astrology was, I quickly realized it was the study of God, in the form of the universe. I was happy to have come to this realization independence of any astronomical confirmation or Vedic/Scriptural confirmation - even though those things quickly followed.

Our solar system is 4 1/2 billion years old. The planets have been moving in their orbits that long, yet life on Earth has only existed for the last 500 million years – about 1/10 of the time. 9/10 of the history of our solar system there was for all intents and purposes, no life. So what was happening during that time? Well, the divine Universe was getting the formula right, so that by the time creatures with bodies appeared, the bodies would work really well, and the genius of each of the planets would be embedded into our entire organism.

If you're ever curious about all of the fantastic stories of the gods, and all of their activities happening in the invisible realm, just remember the fact of the age of the universe measured against the age of "humanity". Human beings did not appear on the scene until approximately 100,000 years ago, one 1/45,000 of the history of our solar system.
It is from this beginning point that we acknowledge the planets as deities, and in the Vedic tradition, and the zodiac itself as the sacred Path these deities have been traveling for billions of years. Their power and psychology takes form once we have an ascendant, and the houses are set up correctly.

Static and Dynamic Factors

This unfolding karma takes place on many levels, both subtle and gross, and through the three bodies of Spirit, (Planets / causal body) emotion, (Sign / astral body) and form (Houses / physical body). All three of these are seen when we assess the birth chart (static factor) to intersecting with the dashas (timing cycle) to end the transits in the sky each day (the cosmic timepiece). This is where......

90% of your astrology focus should be. You could take lifetime's of simply studying planets, signs and houses through the various Vedic frameworks - pondering the myths and symbology - penetrating more deeply into the zodiac itself as a sacred mandala - and still not begin to exhaust the depth of wisdom found here. The Level 1 certification course...

...deepens and concentrates these universal themes before jumping around like a drunk monkey on to more complicated and bewildering techniques. This is good news for you! Because you have likely gathered more than enough information, but it is not integrated nor is it deep enough. Meaning, first there must be a focus on all of the Vedic concepts and structures as they relate to planet signs and houses individually. Then, the integration of static and dynamic factors needs to happen. And most importantly...

... You need to know how planets, signs and houses interact with each other, then interface with timing methods. As is the case with everything in life, going more deeply into the right things and (most importantly) to in the correct order, is more important than learning a lot of things, our order and without a lot of depth. This is the typical approach to learning Vedic astrology.

Focus on Universal Principles First
The reason the Universal Astrology system works so well is because it focuses on the Universal principles, just like every other Science. For example, the rules of architecture work regardless of culture, system or anything else. If you do not honor the rules of architecture, the Universal Law of Gravity will crash your house to the ground.

Similarly, if you do not know the Universal laws of astrology (and all metaphysics), the Universal Law of Karma will crash your life in no time. The reason so many astrologers are not good astrology teachers is because they are not teaching from a foundational point of view, focusing on the Universal principles.

Here are a few of the most important Universal Principles:

  • The planets themselves as karakas (Gods)
  • The 3 Gunas (body/mind/soul)
  • The Five elements (Earth/water/fire/air/space)
  • The 4 Purusarthas (Dharma/artha/kama/moksha)
  • The Castes (Brahmin/Kshatriya/Vaishya/Sudra)
  • Gender - Inner and outer (Masculine / Feminine/Neuter)
  • Modalities (Moveable/Fixed/Dual)
  • Natural Benefic / Malefic
  • Functional Benefic / Malefic
  • Gentle / Cruel
  • Yogas (Sambandha - connections)
  • Planetary Order
  • Nature of Houses
  • Astronomy
  • Visual / observational phenomena

These frameworks not only underpin Vedic astrology, they underpin all metaphysical systems the world over, and they always have. This is why there are so many Western astrologers, and metaphysicians from other disciplines, who take my courses. Given the heavy emphasis on these common frameworks, yoga teachers and Ayurvedic practitioners find this certification course to be stellar.

But even if you are a beginner, the frameworks can be easily grasped, then each planet, sign, house and principal is simply "hung" on that framework.

For instance:
Aries is Rajasic (passionate), fiery,  masculine, ruled by Mars, Cardinal, large, quadruped
Scorpio is Tamasic (protective), watery, feminine, ruled by Mars,  fixed, Slender, insect.

Both signs are ruled by Mars, yet we can see specifically how they are different from each other, and how they are alike. This is systematic and flawless. Using these frameworks correctly allows you to simply state each principle, and untangle their meanings for yourself and others. Of course, this is a simple example. But all of astrology functions on the complexity of these simple building blocks.

By the way, as was said,  these are the same principles that underpin medicine, architecture, music and anything else that we can master at a high level. Things become complicated when we become disconnected from their component qualities and the Universal principles that create it.
